The Hiram Bingham train is named after the explorer who discovered the fascinating remains of the Inca citadel, Machu Picchu, on July 23rd, 1911. The carriages are painted with its distinctive elegant blue and gold exteriors. The interiors are warm and inviting with the style of the 1920's Pullman trains. At the train station, you will be welcomed by colourful indigenous folklore dancers and musicians and a refreshing aperitif. Day 1: Lima
Upon arrival at Lima's airport, and after you clear customs, you will be met and greeted by our representative that will transport you to your hotel for check-in. Rest of your day is at leisure to experience Lima on your own. Overnight at Miraflores Park Hotel.
Day 2: Lima - Cusco
Breakfast at your hotel. You will be taken to Lima airport for your flight to Cusco. Upon arrival, you will be met by our representative and will be transported to your hotel for check-in. In the early afternoon, your will begin by a Cusco city tour visiting the Cathedral and the Koricancha. You will then continue to explore the 4 nearby ruins: Sacsayhuaman: Located 3 kms. from Cusco, Inca fortress with an excellent and great architecture. Qenqo: Ceremonial and ritual center, also place where sacrifices were made. PucaPucara: Was more likely a Tambo, or kind of post house than an actual fortress. Tambomachay: About 7 kms. from Cusco, site for ritual bathing its use was restricted to the higher nobility, who maybe only used the baths on ceremonial occasions. Return to your hotel. Day 3: Cusco - Sacred Valley of the Incas - Cusco
Breakfast at your hotel. You will commence this morning with a full-day excursion to the "Sacred Valley of the Incas", by the Vilcanota River. You will have the opportunity to share closely the peasants' customs and bargain with vendors at the typical indian market of Pisac, held on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. A gourmet lunch will be served at the Wayra Ranch, in which you will be entertained by a show. After lunch, passing through the Towns of Calca and Urubamba, we visit the Inca Fortress and Citadel of Ollantaytambo, built to guard the entrance to this part of the Valley, and protect it from possible invasion from the tribes in the Lower jungle. The Fortress consists of a series of stepped carved stone terraces accessed by long staircases. Later on you can walk through the quaint streets of the nearby Town, and get a good idea of what this Strategic Military, Religious, and Agricultural Centre was like during the era of the Inca Empire. On your way back to Cusco, there will be a stop of at the picturesque Andean Village of Chincheros where the ruins of the Royal Hacienda of Tupac Inca Yupanqui lie. You can admire the well-preserved Inca Wall in the Main Square, and visit the beautiful Colonial temple built on Inca foundations, with interesting frescoes in the portico. Return to Cusco and take you to your hotel. Overnight at Aranwa Cusco Boutique Hotel. (B,L)
Day 4: Cusco - Machu Picchu- Aguas Calientes
Breakfast and check out of your hotel. You will be picked up at your hotel and bring you to Cusco's train station to board the luxurious Orient Express Hiram Bingham train. Relive the glamorous era of the 1920's Pullman car elegance, accented with solid brass. During your journey towards Aguas Calientes you will enjoy a delicious brunch with Peruvian wines. Upon arrival at Aguas Calientes, you will be taken to your hotel for check in. Shortly after, you will be taken to meet with your Private Guide to start your Machu Picchu tour. At the end of your private excursion you will be taken to the Sanctuary Lodge restaurant for Tea Time. Return to Aguas Calientes to your hotel, where you will enjoy a delicious dinner. Day 5: Aguas Calientes - Cusco
Breakfast and check out of your hotel. This morning will be at leisure, you may visit the beauty of the Mandor Waterfall or just explore the charming pueblo of Aguas Calientes on your own. In the late afternoon, you will be transported to the train station to board the Hiram Bingham train back to Cusco. On board you will enjoy a delicious dinner with Peruvian wines. Arrival at Cusco train station, we will take you to your hotel for check-in. Overnight the Aranwa Cusco Boutique Hotel. (B,D)
Day 6: Cusco - Departure
Breakfast and check out of your hotel. You will be taken to Cusco airport for your flight back home. (B) The Hiram Bingham Train operates daily except Sundays. Baggage allowance on board the Hiram Bingham Train is only 10kg per person. You may store the bulk of your luggage at your Cusco hotel before being transfered to Cusco's rail station.
