This morning, explore the most important sites of Florence, its most famous monuments, palaces & squares. Your expert local guide will take you on an exciting journey through time, revealing the history, anecdotes and secrets kept in this wonderful city. From the still visible traces of the Roman foundation of the city (in 59 BC), the Middle Ages, up to the glorious Renaissance, a period in which Florence was ruled by the powerful Medici family. Your discovery will start with the ancient Medici Family District in the heart of Florence. You will walk along the same narrow streets where the Medici' walked, touching the stones used to build their residences and seeing the same monuments they used to see every day. The first building example is Palazzo Medici Riccardi, their first residence in the San Lorenzo district, where you can find their Church and the mausoleum-Medici Chapels. A few steps away, you will reach the amazing complex of monuments that characterize the religious centre of Florence: the Cathedral with its incredible Brunelleschi dome, the Baptistery of San Giovanni with the Porta del Paradiso (Gates of Paradise), and the elegant Giotto bell tower, the loveliest in all of Italy. The walk continues along the medieval area with Dante's House and the lively Via Calzaioli in the heart of the city, where you can admire the imposing and singular Orsanmichele Church, a masterpiece of Florentine gothic art, featuring shrines with statues of the patron saints of the powerful medieval trade guilds. We then reach the bustling Mercato della Paglia (Straw Market): don’t forget to rub the nose of the famous "porcellino" (pig) and toss a coin into the fountain for good luck! We then we arrive in Piazza Signoria, one of the most beautiful squares in the world and the political centre of the city. In this true “outdoor museum”, you’ll be amazed as you admire the beautiful Fountain of Neptune with the imposing marble statue by Ammannati and then, looking around, the sculptural masterpieces of the Loggia dei Lanzi, including the Cellini’s Perseus and the Gianbologna’s Rape of the Sabines. Dominating all this is the majestic Palazzo Vecchio with its crenelated Arnolfo tower, one of the most famous symbols of Florence. You will be able to visit the courtyard by Michelozzo and admire the Palace in all its magnificence. Continuing on, you can admire the romantic, picturesque Ponte Vecchio, the oldest bridge in Florence, with its renowned jewellery shops. The guided walk lasts about 1 hour 30 minutes. Along with the guided walk, you can also enjoy the audio guide provided by an APP included in your tour. From your own mobile device, you will have unlimited access to the mobile city guide allowing you to explore other aspects of the city and follow suggested itineraries in total freedom and at your own pace!
